Sheriff and Public Safety Officer
Interested in a career as a sheriff, public safety officer, municipal peace officer, highway safety officer, or bylaw enforcement officer? Perhaps you would like to work in armored car or cell block security, then this program will put you on the right path.
Accredited by the Canadian Security Council, the Sheriff and Public Safety Officer program gives you the knowledge and skills needed to work in federal and provincial security agencies, and for private security companies. Successful completion of this program may also enhance your qualifications should you pursue further a career in police training, including the Canadian Armed Forces Military Police.
The program includes driving course and gun range instruction, use of force/control tactics training, communications and mental health training. Law, security, courthouse operations, prisoner transfer, sociology and psychology make up the academic components of the program.
Duration: 24 weeks
Begins in: September
All of the full time programs, offered at the Canadian Centre of Public Safety Excellence, require cadets stay in the residential dormitory provided during their training, excluding the on the job component of the program.
The residence provides experiential learning that would not be possible if students interacted with one another in an instructional setting alone. Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications. It further enhances the development of gender and cross-cultural sensitivity, which are essential to a successful career in the public safety community.
